The Waiclay Team
Janet Smith – President

I have been involved with the organisation of Waiclay exhibitions jointly held with Waikato Museum for over 20 years. This experience has been extremely positive, with each exhibition taking on its own character. I have also been able to meet a wide range of potters from all of New Zealand and the World. Personally I enjoy the challenge of wheel thrown work which I enjoy firing in different ways. Recently I built an Anagama kiln which offers an opportunity to develop different firing programmes using wood
ash and flashing to affect the surface of the work.

I’ve been working with clay since I was a teenager and now 45 years later I am still learning new techniques and skills! I’m a hand-builder and most of my work starts from a simple pinch pot and evolves from there. Nature is my inspiration and I love trying to capture the essence of natural forms without going into too much detail. I have recently had the privilege of participating in several firings of Janet Smith’s Roto-o-rangi anagama kiln and love how the wood-fired finishes compliment my work.

The cornerstones of my studio practice were laid during my participation in the Diploma of Ceramic Arts, there I was introduced to the huge potential that lay within a ball of clay, a wealth of New Zealand potters/ceramic artists/clay workers and the fellowship that aligns itself to clay. In my own studio practise I have continued to embrace all things clay, working mainly as a hand-builder and continue to explore firings from the pit through to wood firings. Through my various tutoring roles not only do I have an opportunity to pass on learnt techniques but also to encourage others as they take their first tentative steps. I consider myself to be fortunate to work within both ends of the spectrum, from the humble first steps of beginners to the skilled potter who present their pieces on the Waiclay Exhibition platform.
