Janet Smith – President

Janet Smith is a Cambridge-based studio potter and Waiclay President, celebrated for building and firing a rare four-metre anagama woodfired kiln on her Roto-o-Rangi property. With over four decades at the wheel, she hosts collaborative firings that produce richly ash-glazed pots and foster strong community bonds


Fiona Tunnicliffe – Secretary Treasurer

Fiona Tunnicliffe is a Putāruru based potter with a 30 year career creating charming, animal inspired sculptures. A graduate of Whanganui Polytech and Otago Polytechnic, she won the prestigious 2019 Waiclay Premier Award for her “Blue Horse.” Her intricately textured ceramics, rich in personality and humor, and are widely exhibited nationally. Fiona is our Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.


John Parker – Exhibition Designer

John Parker is a renowned Auckland-based ceramic artist known for his strikingly minimalist, finely thrown porcelain works. With a background in both ceramics and theatre design, his sculptural forms are often architectural, precise, and dramatically lit. Parker’s distinctive style has earned him national acclaim and a significant place in New Zealand art. John is our exhibition and catalogue Designer


Marion Manson – Social Media Coordinator

Marion Manson of Hamilton is another non potter and enjoys supporting the ‘down to earth’ potters with their social media. Marion specialises in paper sculpture, bookmaking and botanical inks. Her bookmaking practice integrates paper altering techniques and using repurposed and recycled papers. 


Duncan Shearer – Website

Duncan Shearer is a Paeroa based studio potter working from Rahu Road Pottery. A UNITEC ceramics graduate (1998), he creates functional woodfired stoneware using local Coromandel clays and soda glazing. His richly surfaced mugs, bowls, jugs, and teapots reflect experimentation, tradition, and decades of teaching and kiln innovation. Duncan coordinates our website.


David Lloyd

David Lloyd is a Hamilton-based artist, sculptor, former teacher and founder of Davids Emporium and David Lloyd Gallery (2008). He champions emerging Waikato artists, hosting over 70 exhibitions and youth awards. Working across metal, stone, demolition wood and found objects, his creative generosity and civic-minded spirit earned him a 2016 Hamilton Civic Award. David is receiver of accepted works.


Trish Seddon – Committee

Trish Seddon is a Cambridge potter with 45 years of experience. A passionate hand-builder, she creates nature-inspired ceramics that capture organic forms with simplicity. Trish values continuous learning and recently embraced wood-fired finishes through collaborative firings in Janet Smith’s Roto-o-rangi anagama kiln. Trish is our Salon des Refusés coordinator


Alex Wilkinson

Alex Wilkinson is a ceramic artist based in Waikato, known for her vibrant nerikomi tableware and sculptural work. Founder of Mystery Creek Ceramics, she creates bold, functional pieces stocked across Aotearoa. Her practice blends colour, craftsmanship, and care, shaped by a deep love for clay and community. Alex supports our funding applications.


Julie Burwell

Julie Burwell is a dairy farmer, potter, gardener and ash glaze specialist.  Julie completed the Diploma of Ceramic Glaze course developing some fabulous ash glazes she uses in her wood kiln. Julie is a committee member


Caryn Stone – Exhibition Entry Co-ordinator

Caryn Stone of Matata is Janet Smiths daughter and with much convincing from her Mum is our Waiclay Receiver for many years. Surrounded by Ceramics most of her life  she loves getting to know the names that enter and exhibit at Waiclay.  Caryn recently attended a Fiona Tunnicliffe class and produced a dog..
